The FES Difference for Career Pilots

Fraction of Academy Cost

Large flight academies charge $89,000–$124,000 for the same certificates. Our all-in estimated total to CFII is $65,459 — trained in Arizona's ideal flying weather, no mandatory housing, no forced full-time schedule.

Train on Your Timeline

No contracts. No cohorts. No locked-in start dates. Train 2–3 times a week or accelerate — it's your schedule. Phoenix gives you 300+ flying days a year to work with.

Get Paid While You Build Hours

Once you earn your CFI, you're a certified flight instructor. Teaching other students is how most pilots efficiently build the 1,500 hours required for an ATP certificate — and you earn income while doing it. The CFI route is the fastest, most affordable path to the airlines.

Zero to Airlines — Every Step, Every Cost

Estimated costs reflect typical student progress at FES rates as of April 2026. Individual results vary based on preparation and lesson frequency.

Private Pilot Certificate

~5 months at 2–3 flights/week Remos GX · 40–65 hrs typical

Your foundation. The PPL lets you fly solo and carry passengers in good weather. At FES you train in the Remos GX with a dedicated instructor who knows your goals and your progress — not whoever is available that day.

Instrument Rating

~5 months Remos GX + Redbird Simulator

Fly in clouds and low visibility — a critical skill and a career requirement. The Redbird LD simulator at FES counts toward instrument time at $70/hr vs. $200/hr in the aircraft, so this stage is where smart scheduling saves real money.

FES Estimate
$16,954
Running total: $31,422
03

Commercial Pilot Certificate

~3–6 months 250 total hours required

The FAA requires 250 total flight hours for a Commercial certificate. Most of this stage is building cross-country hours — and this is where the FES split-time option makes a significant difference. Two students share the aircraft on cross-country flights, each paying half the aircraft rate while both logging the time. See the Split Time section below.

The FAA allows up to 50 cumulative simulator hours to count toward your 250-hour commercial total — and that 50 includes the 2.5 hours logged for your Private Pilot and 20 hours for your Instrument Rating. That leaves approximately 27.5 additional Redbird hours available in this stage at $70/hr vs. $200/hr in the aircraft — a potential savings of over $3,500 on top of what you've already saved in earlier stages.

CFI Certificate

~3 months Become a certified instructor

This is where the path changes. The moment you pass your CFI checkride, you stop paying to fly and start getting paid to fly. Teaching student pilots is the single most efficient way to build the 1,500 hours required for an ATP certificate — you're in the cockpit every day, logging hours, and earning income while doing it.

CFII — Instrument Instructor

~1 month (add-on to CFI) More students = more hours, more income

With a CFII, you can teach instrument students in addition to VFR students. This expands your student pool significantly and increases the hours you can log per day. At $3,754 this is one of the best investments in the entire path.

FES Total — PPL Through CFII

This is your all-in estimated cost from zero experience through Certified Flight Instrument Instructor — the training that qualifies you to teach and earn income while building toward 1,500 hours. Multi-engine training is additional via our co-located partner.

Estimated Total
$65,459
PPL · IR · CPL · CFI · CFII

One more item to be aware of: Before sitting for the ATP written exam, pilots are required to complete an ATP Certification Training Program (ATP-CTP) — a multi-day ground and simulator course. Current market pricing is typically in the $4,000–$5,000 range. This cost is not included in the FES estimate above because many regional airlines cover it as part of their hiring or onboarding process. We recommend confirming with your target airline before paying out of pocket.

Cut Your Cross-Country Costs in Half

The Commercial certificate requires 250 total flight hours. A significant portion of that is cross-country time — long flights that are primarily about logging hours rather than learning specific maneuvers. That makes them ideal for splitting.

When once qualified, two students can fly together on cross-country legs, each logging the time while splitting the aircraft cost 50/50. You're each in the cockpit, each building hours — but only paying for half the Hobbs meter. No CFI required for these solo cross-country flights once you hold your PPL.

For a student who does 100 hours of cross-country this way, that's roughly $7,000 in aircraft savings compared to flying alone.

Example: 1-Hour Cross-Country Flight
Flying solo (one student, no CFI needed) $140/hr aircraft
Split-time (two students, same flight, no CFI) $70/hr each
Savings per hour $70/hr per student
Savings on 100 cross-country hours $7,000 per student

How to read this table: Competitor costs reflect publicly available and advertised prices for programs that take students from zero experience through the certifications needed to pursue airline employment. FES pricing reflects estimated costs at our current rates for the same certifications. Multi-engine training (required for most airlines) is additional at FES via our co-located partner and is typically additional at career academies as well. Full-time program costs often include mandatory fees, deposits, or housing not reflected above — always ask what's included. FES's cost advantage grows further when you factor in the split-time hour-building option during your Commercial phase.

Do This
in Phases.

One of the biggest advantages of training at FES is that you're never locked in to a single payment or contract. Each certification is a milestone you can plan and finance on your own terms — without pre-paying $89,000 upfront to an academy before you've flown a single hour.

Our financing partners — including Stratus Financial and Pilot Training Finance — offer loans structured around aviation training, and local lenders are an option worth exploring as well. Some students finance one stage at a time, cash-flow the next, and finance again when needed. There's no single right way.
